Golf is trying for change
Not since the early eighties has their been an official team event on Tour. This week it's happening. Loiusiana will host the event in foursome and fourball format. It should be interesting for a change.
Next week the European Tour host the golf sixes, where again, a team format involves players in matches over 6 holes. Now this should be exciting and I suppose it's golf's answer to 2020 cricket. It's only in St Albans, an hour away and might be worth going to see. At least this, like the US Tour event, gets away from the robotic four round events we see week in week out.
Golf needs this sort of thing to attract young players. The Tour has got it going and I hope it works.
Change of Rules
The governing bodies of golf and rulers of the game have at last made the decision to change the rules regarding video intervention. This comes after the recent issue with Lexi Thompson at the ladies first major where a member of the public called in after watching the third day's play on a recording and noticed an irregular ball replacement. It cost the American the tournament and now quite rightly the R and A and USGA have decided enough is enough and are going back to player integrity. If the issue can't be seen by the naked eye then no infringement will have taken place. This must be a good thing for golf, enhanced footage is just too much.
Well done the rule makers. Now just get the game played faster at the "top" and more people might want to take part.
Back on the golfing front, Rory got married last weekend at Ashford Castle in County Mayo to his fiancée, EricaStoll. Just the £200,000 was spent on the extravaganza that was laid on.
It was a who's who of golfing pals at the event. Sergio, Padraig, Shane and McGinley to name a few. Performing was just Ed Sheeran and American legend Stevie Wonder. Sounds like he got away pretty cheap really!
FA Cup Semi Finals
Two fantastic FA Cup semi finals were held over the weekend. Andy, my head assistant was at the first one supporting his beloved Tottenham. Unfortunately they came off worse to Chelsea in an end to end game. Arsenal, Man City was another titanic battle with the Gunners and Arsene Wenger beating Pep's City in extra time. This only rubbed it in for Andy as Claire his partner is a huge Gooner fan, as is his best friend Ben!
Wenger goes to the final for the fourth time in five years and Tottenham have been beaten in their last 7 semi finals!
It's a big weekend if your a fan of the purest form of pugilist sport. Who is your money on, Joshua or Klitschko? What round and how will they win? Click here to send me your thoughts.
Orsett member Lee Maskell lit up The Saturday Cup from the Championship tees last weekend. His round of 73 nett 66 was his best in a competition for a few months.
"I've recently had some lessons with David and the changes have been gradually improving my game. My bad shots are much better which is the secret to low scores. Most of it was not very technical, more rhythm and putting the speed in the best place...at the ball! It all came together last weekend and it was nice to play under my handicap again."
Runner up was Thornton Cup squaddie, cadet Alfie Buttle also with a season best of level par 72, nett 67, just in front of, Leslie Wood squad member and cadet Tommy King who had a79, nett 68. Nice playing fella, keep up the good work Leebo.
Teds team move into the second round
Vice Captain, Kevin "Irish Ted" Lyons led his team to a comfortable first round victory over Harwich and Dovercourt in the County's Leslie Wood competition. Arguably harder to win than the Thornton Cup (as more Clubs can field stronger teams) Orsett's team led at lunch 4/1 after the foursomes. The singles went a similar way cumilating in an 11-4 final score.
Kevin was very pleased with the result. "
It's always nice to get a home draw for the first round but you still have to win. The team did really well and with quite a few new foursome combinations, we're looking quite strong. The team now have to travel away for the next game in a few weeks. They are all playing regularly and with a couple of practice rounds we have a good chance there. Thanks to Rog for helping me, you can't be in two places at once and tahnks also to the members who came out to caddie and support the team."

Graham Eacersall recently got fitted for a set of the new PING i200 irons. He is so happy with them and the difference they have made to both his scores and confidence. He has not had less than 34 points since using them and scored 38 points in last weekends club sweep.
"I have been struggling all winter but finally made the decision to change my irons. The only question I have is, why didn't I do it sooner? The feel and ball flight are so much better than my previous set. I can't thank David enough for fitting them and letting me test the fitted iron before investing. I'm looking forward to getting out and playing now, whereas I was previously just going to play for the sake of it."
Other fitting days are planned for this season with Lynx, Mizuno and Titleist all being arranged, so keep a look out around the shop and clubhouse for details.
